Regionals were held on the 5th July 2013, and the Naenae College kapa haka group took part in this successful event. As previous winners, we knew what was to be expected.
It hit 11 am and Te Whanau Tahi headed off to the Horticultural Hall to participate in the Whakataetae Kapa a Haka a Rohe mo Nga Kura Tuarua o te Awakairangi ki Wairarapa. A.k.a Hutt Valley and Wairarapa kapa haka finals. We were all extremely nervous but at the same time, bursting with excitement. An hour ticked by on the clock and we had our last run through our bracket before hitting the stage. “THE TIME HAD COME”, we were on stage in front of an audience with a few hundred people watching us. As a kapa haka roopu, we knew this was no time to muck around now – which we didn’t – as we placed first out of the whole competition. We were buzzing with excitement; we owned the stage and we earned our awards. All the hard work finally paid off.
Coming off stage at the Kapa Haka Regionals this year was exhilarating. We finally did it. We got dressed and we went and watched the final performers, Heretaunga College.
It was that time; we were sitting and waiting for the results for aggregate and non-aggregate items. We won 1st in the poi, whakaeke, waiata-tira, haka, moteatea, kaitataki wahine and kaitataki tane and we placed 2nd in the waiata-a-ringa. We came first over all!
We are about to embark on a new journey by going up to Gisborne for Kapa Haka Nationals next year. It’s going to be a hard journey but we will get there. We would like to thank all the support we had from the whānau and to the tutors for helping us along the way and not giving up on us.
